EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 20th century, when the North Eastern Railway (NER) sought to entice travelers with its picturesque routes. The poster, part of a series showcasing historic monuments in North East England, transports us to Barnard Castle in Durham. Standing proudly on a rocky crag, this medieval marvel was constructed between the 11th and 12th centuries as a formidable guardian of the River Tees crossing point. The artwork for this enchanting poster was masterfully created by Frank Henry Mason, an artist with a diverse background. Having received his education at HMS Conway and spent time at sea, Mason's passion for marine and coastal subjects shines through his work. His involvement in engineering and shipbuilding adds depth to his artistic perspective. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported into an era where railways were not just modes of transportation but gateways to exploration and discovery. This NER poster serves as both an invitation and a testament to the rich history that awaits those who embark on these railway journeys. Preserved by the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print captures not only the beauty of Barnard Castle but also reflects upon our collective fascination with heritage sites that have stood against the test of time.
