The Lake District for Holidays, LMSR poster, 1930s
Poster produced for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMSR), promoting rail travel to the Lake District. The poster shows a view of Grasmere, with a view across a lake to some hills, peaks and foliage in the background. There are three people in a small rowing boat on the lake. Artwork by Norman Wilkinson, who studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. A famous marine painter, he designed posters for the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) and Southern Railway (SR) and organised the Royal Academy series of posters for the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) in 1924

The Coronation Scot Ascending Shap Fell, LMS poster, 1937
Poster produced for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel between London and Glasgow. The poster shows the Coronation Scot steam locomotive travelling through the Cumbria countryside, with mountains in the background. The Coronation Scot travelled between London's Euston Station and Glasgow Central Station, with a journey time of six and a half hours, and in 1937 during test runs, broke a British railway record achieving a maximum speed of 114 miles per hour. Artwork by Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971), who studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. A famous marine painter, he designed posters for several different rail companies. Carlisle: The Gateway to Scotland, LMS poster, 1924
Poster produced for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) as part of a series of posters commissioned from members of the Royal Academy. The series was the idea of the poster artist Norman Wilkinson, who sought to raise the status of the poster by combining commercial art with high art. This poster was the most popular one of the series. Artwork by Maurice Greiffenhagen, who was Danish by descent and studied at University College School and the Royal Academy Schools. He worked for the Ladies Pictorial and the Daily Chronicle and taught at the Glasgow School of Art. He exhibited in Munich, Dresden and Ghent. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 1270 mm
