Carlisle, the Gateway to Scotland, 1924

Original oil painting produced for London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) for their Royal Academy series, showing a knight in armour on a white horse with a castle in the background. This painting was made into a poster. Artwork by Maurice Greiffenhagen (1862-1931). The artist was Danish by descent and educated at University College School and the Royal Academy Schools. He also taught at the Glasgow School of Art and exhibited in Munich, Dresden and Ghent. Greiffenhagen was one of the Academicians commissioned by the LMS in 1924
