Modernisation - Temple Mills Marshalling Yard, BR poster, 1948-1965

Poster produced for British Railways (BR) to promote the companys ongoing programme of modernisation. The poster shows the Temple Mills freight Marshalling Yard, near Leyton, north-east London. An image of the Hump Cabin is shown above a plan indicating the network of branching and interconnected lines where freight trains could be assembled from individual trucks. The Hump was a mound over which wagons were shunted, to couple with other vehicles, upon which the newly made-up train could move down into the departure sidings. Arwork by F Donald Blake. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of modernization in the Temple Mills Marshalling Yard, a significant freight hub near Leyton, London. Created between 1948 and 1965 as part of British Railways' ongoing program to upgrade its infrastructure, this poster showcases the yard's remarkable transformation. The image prominently features the Hump Cabin, an integral component of the marshalling process. The Hump Cabin stands tall above a meticulously planned network of branching and interconnected lines that facilitated the assembly of freight trains from individual trucks. Wagons were shunted over a mound known as "the Hump" allowing them to couple with other vehicles before descending into departure sidings. This ingenious system ensured efficient movement and organization within the bustling yard. The artwork by F Donald Blake beautifully portrays this scene, capturing both the scale and complexity of operations at Temple Mills Marshalling Yard. Measuring an impressive 1010 mm x 1260 mm, this poster is not only visually striking but also serves as a testament to British Railways' commitment to progress during that era. Preserved in National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print offers viewers a glimpse into an important chapter in railway history – one where innovation and modernization revolutionized freight transportation.
