EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage poster, titled "First Sailing of RMS Queen Mary" takes us back to the grandeur and excitement of a bygone era. Produced in 1936 by Southern Railways (SR), this artwork was intended to advertise the inaugural voyage of the magnificent liner Queen Mary, as well as tickets for this momentous event from London train stations. The poster showcases the sheer scale and opulence of the Queen Mary, which held the distinction of being both the largest and fastest liner ever built at that time. With its impressive capacity to accommodate over two thousand passengers and crew members, it symbolized luxury travel like no other vessel before it. Designed by Leslie Carr, an accomplished artist known for his marine subjects and architectural masterpieces, this masterpiece captures the essence of elegance associated with ocean liners. The intricate details bring life to every aspect depicted in this artwork – from majestic smokestacks billowing white clouds against a serene blue sky to sleek lines cutting through calm waters. Notably, Queen Mary's exceptional speed earned her two Blue Riband titles in 1936 and 1938 – a testament to her remarkable engineering prowess. Furthermore, she played a crucial role during World War II as a troop ship. Preserved within these dimensions measuring 1016 mm x 1270 mm is not just an exquisite piece of art but also a glimpse into history when transatlantic voyages were celebrated events filled with anticipation and wonder.
