The Royal Border Bridge, BR poster, 1948-1965

Poster produced for British Railways (BR) to promote rail travel between England and Scotland on the East Coast route, which passed through Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. The poster shows a steam locomotive crossing the Royal Border Bridge over the River Tweed, which was opened by Queen Victoria (1819-1901) in 1850. Terence Cuneo was commissioned by British Railways to paint this as one of a series of paintings promoting the railways journeys to York, Newcastle and Berwick. The Royal Border Bridge was the second railway poster that Cuneo painted for the East Coast route. Artwork by Terence Cuneo (1907-1996)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back in time to the golden era of rail travel. The Royal Border Bridge, a masterpiece of Victorian engineering, takes center stage as it gracefully spans the majestic River Tweed. Painted by renowned artist Terence Cuneo, this poster was created to entice travelers to embark on an unforgettable journey between England and Scotland along the East Coast route. The scene is set against a backdrop of lush greenery and rolling hills, showcasing the picturesque beauty of Berwick-on-Tweed in Northumberland. A steam locomotive triumphantly crosses the bridge, its billowing smoke adding an air of nostalgia and adventure to the composition. Opened by Queen Victoria herself in 1850, this iconic bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity and serves as a symbol of unity between two nations. Its grandeur is perfectly captured by Cuneo's masterful brushstrokes, which effortlessly convey both power and elegance. Commissioned by British Railways, Cuneo's artwork forms part of a series promoting railway journeys to York, Newcastle, and Berwick. His attention to detail brings every element alive - from the intricate ironwork on the bridge to the subtle reflections dancing upon the river's surface. As we gaze upon this timeless image captured by NRM/Cuneo Fine Arts for posterity at National Railway Museum, we are reminded not only of Britain's rich railway heritage but also our own longing for exploration and discovery that can be fulfilled through rail travel.
