York Minster, LNER poster, 1941

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the city of York, showing a view of York Minster. The Minster, the largest medieval cathedral in Europe, was built from 1220 and took two and a half centuries to complete. Artwork by Fred Taylor (1875-1963), who was commissioned in 1930 to design four ceiling paintings for the Underwriting Room at Lloyd's and murals for Reed's Lacquer Room. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and other London galleries and worked for LNER, London Transport and several shipping companies

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote train services to York. The poster shows the 18th century highwayman, Dick Turpin (1705-1739), whose famous ride to York on his horse Black Bess was recounted in Harrison Ainsworth's Rookwood (1824). This image shows Turpin riding at speed through the Yorkshire countryside, with York Minster in the background. Artwork by Doris Zinkeisen (1898-1991) who was born in Scotland and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. She lived in London and worked for the stage, designing sets and costumes

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the historic city of York. The poster shows an interior view of the Treasurer's House, which was built in 1419 and was originally the home of the city's medieval treasurers. Artwork by Fred Taylor (1875-1963), who was commissioned in 1930 to design four ceiling paintings for the Underwriting Room at Lloyd's and murals for Reed's Lacquer Room. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and other London galleries and worked for the Empire Marketing Board, LNER, London Transport and several shipping companies
