EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print, we are transported back to the elegant world of Georgian ladies indulging in a rare treat - tea. The excitement is palpable as a group of women gather around, eagerly awaiting their first taste of this luxurious beverage. In the 18th century, tea was considered an expensive delicacy, making it likely that these ladies had never experienced its flavors before. The image offers us a glimpse into the customs and social gatherings of the time. Teacups without handles, known as teabowls, were used during this period, adding to the charm and authenticity of the scene. As they hold their delicate cups with grace and poise, one can almost imagine them engaging in lively conversations about society's latest gossip or sharing stories from their own lives. This enchanting artwork is part of R. Caldecott's Second Collection of Pictures and Songs; a compilation that showcases his remarkable talent for capturing everyday moments with intricate detail and vibrant colors. Published by George Routledge & Sons in London & New York around 1885, Caldecott's work continues to captivate art enthusiasts today. As we admire this snapshot from history through Whitemay Fine Art Storehouse's lens, we are reminded not only of how far our society has come but also how even simple pleasures like sipping tea have evolved over time.
