Chimney Pots
25th June 1955: A view of chimney pots on the roof tops of houses in Dundee. Dundee, situated on the banks of the dSilvery Tayf, is linked to Fife and the south of Scotland by a road bridge, opened in 1966, and a rail bridge finished in 1897 to replace the one which collapsed during a storm in 1879. Dundee is most famous for its jute industry which began as a by-product of whaling in the eighteenth century when it was discovered that the whale oil mixed with raw jute enabled workers to spin the fibre into fabric. The textile industry flourished in Dundee and at its peak employed 50, 000 people. The area around the city is used for fruit growing which is the foundation for a thriving jam industry founded in 1797 by Mrs Keiller, who began making the famous Dundee marmalade. Captain Scottfs ship dDiscoveryf was built in the local shipyards on Tayside for its journey to the Antarctic in 1901 and has recently been restored for the city to display in dry dock as a tourist attraction. Chimney Pots: A Glimpse into Dundee's Rich History". This photo print, taken by John Murray in 1955, offers a fascinating view of the chimney pots adorning the rooftops of houses in Dundee. Situated on the picturesque banks of the Silvery Tay, this Scottish city boasts a storied past that is intricately woven into its architectural landscape. Dundee's connection to Fife and southern Scotland was solidified by both a road bridge opened in 1966 and a rail bridge completed in 1897. However, it is perhaps best known for its thriving jute industry, which originated as an unexpected outcome of whaling activities during the eighteenth century. The discovery that whale oil mixed with raw jute enabled workers to spin fiber into fabric led to a flourishing textile industry that once employed an impressive workforce of 50,000 individuals. Beyond textiles, Dundee also made its mark through fruit growing and jam production. The fertile area surrounding the city served as the foundation for a prosperous jam industry established by Mrs Keiller in 1797. Her famous creation, Dundee marmalade, continues to delight taste buds today. Adding further historical significance to this vibrant city is Captain Scott's ship Discovery. Built at Tayside's local shipyards in 1901 for his Antarctic expedition, this iconic vessel has been meticulously restored and now stands proudly displayed in dry dock as a popular tourist attraction. Murray's evocative photograph not only captures the charm of these chimney pots but also serves as a visual gateway into Dundee's rich heritage – from its industrial prowess to its culinary delights and maritime achievements.
