Car, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham
Car, 1951. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Car, 1951" showcases the artistic brilliance of Shirley Markham, a talented graphic designer and illustrator. Born in 1931, Markham honed her skills at the prestigious Central School of Art in London under the guidance of renowned writer and artist Mervyn Peake. Inspired by esteemed British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden, she developed a unique style that exudes charm and creativity. During her time in Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome, Markham immersed herself in sketching classical buildings, which undoubtedly influenced her work. After graduating from Central School of Art, she embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer. Her illustrations adorned books, comics' cartoons menus, and programs with finesse. Unfortunately for art enthusiasts everywhere but understandably so given societal expectations at the time - Markham made the difficult decision to abandon her promising career after getting married in 1957. Middle-class women were often expected to prioritize raising children and managing households over pursuing professional aspirations. Regrettably hidden away for years within her family's attic, Markham's remarkable portfolio is now being unveiled to the world for the first time through this publication. It serves as a testament to both her immense talent as an artist and the barriers faced by women during that era. This print captures just one glimpse into Shirley Markham's extraordinary body of work – an enduring legacy finally brought into light.
