Nickels New Railway, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Nickels New Railway, 1845. Messrs. Keene and Nickels have just patented a novel system of Railway Locomotion, which is founded on principles stated not to have been hitherto applied to the communication of mechanical motion. The patentees have constructed a working model of their invention in York road, Waterloo-road, which has been already inspected by several persons of scientific eminence...The proprietors term their system a new Atmospheric Method of Propulsion; but this name is unphilosophically incorrect. Atmospheric Air is, certainly, the propulsive agent; but its elasticity is the property made available in this invention; so that all gaseous bodies might be made serviceable for the above purpose. In short, as observed in the Railway Record, " the system is founded on the expansive force of a compressed aeriform fluid; and might, with propriety, be designated, Propulsion by the Expansion of Condensed Air or Gas". From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in transportation history - Nickels New Railway, 1845. The creator of this remarkable invention remains unknown, but the impact of their work is undeniable. Messrs. Keene and Nickels have unveiled their groundbreaking railway locomotion system, which introduces innovative principles never before applied to mechanical motion. Located on York Road in Waterloo Road, London, this working model has already garnered attention from esteemed scientists and experts in the field. The proprietors refer to their creation as a "new Atmospheric Method of Propulsion" although some argue that this name does not accurately reflect its true nature. While atmospheric air serves as the propulsive agent, it is actually the elasticity of compressed aeriform fluid that drives this revolutionary invention forward. The potential implications of such an advancement are vast and far-reaching. This method could potentially utilize various gaseous bodies for propulsion purposes beyond just atmospheric air. Described by the Railway Record as being founded on the expansive force of condensed air or gas, it opens up endless possibilities for future developments in transportation technology. Preserved within these faded lines lies a testament to human ingenuity and our ceaseless pursuit of progress. As we gaze upon this image from "Illustrated London News" dated 1845, let us appreciate how one simple idea can spark a revolution that shapes our world for generations to come.
