Opening of "Horn Fair"at Charlton, in 1745, 1845. Creator: Unknown

Opening of " Horn Fair" at Charlton, in 1745, 1845. Annual fair in south London; a scene inspired by...a drawing of that period, in the possession of Sir Thomas Maryon Wilson, of Charlton House...It was then customary for the Lord of the Manor to open the fair by reading from a scroll a sort of proclamation to the crowd assembled on the green in front of the manor-house..." An old newspaper informs us that so late as 1770, it was the custom for a procession, formed of a king, a queen, a miller, &c. to leave some of the old inns in Bishopsgate-street, accompanied by a great concourse of people, all of whom: " In comely sorts their foreheads did adorne, With goodly coronets of hardy horne". The fair was said...to have obtained its name from the annual sale of horn drinking cups, spoons, winding-horns, and other articles manufactured of that material. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

Opening of 'Horn Fair' at Charlton, in 1745,1845 - A Glimpse into London's Colorful Past

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the vibrant scene of the annual "Horn Fair" in Charlton, south London. The image, inspired by a drawing from that era owned by Sir Thomas Maryon Wilson of Charlton House, captures a momentous tradition that dates back centuries. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness the Lord of the Manor standing before an excited crowd gathered on the green in front of his grand manor-house. Holding a scroll aloft, he prepares to read aloud a proclamation that will officially open this much-anticipated fair. The historical significance and charm of this event are further highlighted by an old newspaper account from 1770. It describes a lively procession departing from Bishopsgate-street with participants dressed as kings, queens, millers and more. The people proudly adorn their foreheads with horned coronets - symbolizing strength and resilience. Legend has it that this festive gathering acquired its name due to the sale of various items made from horn - drinking cups, spoons and winding-horns among them. These unique artifacts were highly sought after during the fair's heyday. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph print sourced from "Illustrated London News" in 1845 (Volume VII), our imagination is transported to an era filled with merriment and cultural traditions long since faded away.
