White Mare, c. 1868. Creator: Winslow Homer (American, 1836-1910)
White Mare, c. 1868. In August 1868 Winslow Homer, then working as a free-lance illustrator, visited the White Mountains of New Hampshire. As early as the 1820s, American artists used the White Mountains as a setting for landscape paintings. Unlike Thomas Cole (1802-1848) and Asher Durand (1796-1886), who focused on the unspoiled wilderness, Homer turned his attention to other tourists. He made this oil sketch as a study for the horse in a large oil painting The Bridal Path, White Mountains (1868; Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts)

White Mare, c. 1868
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the artistic brilliance of Winslow Homer, an esteemed American painter from the 19th century. During his visit to the picturesque White Mountains of New Hampshire in August 1868, Homer, then working as a free-lance illustrator, captured the essence of this serene landscape. While other artists at that time focused on depicting untouched wilderness, Homer chose to portray a different perspective - that of fellow tourists exploring these magnificent mountains. In this particular oil sketch, he meticulously studies and captures the grace and strength of a white mare. This stunning artwork served as a preliminary study for one of Homer's larger oil paintings titled "The Bridal Path, White Mountains". The final painting can be found at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Homer's ability to infuse life into his subjects through masterful brushstrokes is evident in this piece. The viewer is transported back in time to witness not only nature's beauty but also experience the sense of adventure and exploration shared by those who visited these majestic mountains. Displayed proudly at The Cleveland Museum of Art, "White Mare" stands as a testament to Winslow Homer's contribution to American heritage art. It serves as an enduring reminder of his talent and passion for capturing both natural landscapes and human interactions within them.
