William Jessop, British civil engineer, c1860

William Jessop, British civil engineer, c1860. Jessop (1745-1814) is particularly well known for his work on canals, harbours and early railways in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1790, with Benjamin Outram (1764-1805), he founded the Butterley Ironworks to manufacture cast-iron edge rails, a design Jessop had used successfully in 1789 with flanged wheels on a railway for horse-drawn coal wagons

Known for his remarkable contributions to canals, harbours, and early railways in Britain, Jessop's legacy in the field of engineering is truly unparalleled. In collaboration with Benjamin Outram, another prominent figure in the industry at that time, Jessop established the Butterley Ironworks in 1790. This groundbreaking venture aimed to manufacture cast-iron edge rails - a revolutionary design that had already proven successful when Jessop implemented it on a railway for horse-drawn coal wagons back in 1789. The photograph showcases an engraving of William Jessop's profile; his determined expression reflecting his unwavering dedication to advancing transportation and infrastructure during the Industrial Revolution. With his expertise and vision, he played a pivotal role in shaping Britain's transport system throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As we delve into this historical image captured by Benjamin Outram himself, we are reminded of how individuals like William Jessop paved the way for progress. Their ingenuity not only transformed landscapes but also laid down foundations upon which future generations would build upon. Today, their contributions continue to inspire engineers worldwide as they strive towards innovative solutions that shape our modern world.
