EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a bygone era in Strathpeffer, Scottish Highlands. The focal point is an impressive steam locomotive, numbered 16118, designed by the renowned Peter Drummond and built for the Highland Railway in 1869. This London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) engine stands proudly at Strathpeffer Station, emanating billows of smoke and steam that add to its majestic presence. The train's carriages are equally remarkable as they were each manufactured by different LMS constituent companies. This diversity adds a unique charm to the composition and showcases the collaboration between various railway entities during this time. Photographed by R D Stephen, this image transports us back to an era when steam trains ruled the tracks. The platform bustling with activity hints at the excitement surrounding train travel in those days. It serves as a reminder of how railways connected communities and facilitated exploration across vast landscapes like the Scottish Highlands. As we gaze upon this snapshot from history, we can almost hear the rhythmic chugging of wheels on track and feel a sense of nostalgia for simpler times. It is through photographs like these that we can appreciate both the engineering marvels that were steam locomotives and their significant impact on society during their heyday.
