Augustus Charles Gregory (1819-1905), an Australian explorer and statesman, is depicted in this striking photograph. Born on March 2, 1819, in London, England, Gregory emigrated to Australia with his family when he was just six years old. He grew up in New South Wales and was educated in Sydney before joining the New South Wales Corps in 1836. Gregory's exploratory career began in 1839 when he accompanied Sir Thomas Mitchell on an expedition to explore the interior of New South Wales. He later led his own expeditions, including one to the Kimberley region of Western Australia in 1859, which resulted in the discovery of significant gold deposits. In 1861, Gregory was appointed Surveyor-General of Western Australia, a position he held until 1868. During his tenure, he oversaw the survey and mapping of large areas of the state, including the goldfields. He also played a key role in the establishment of Perth as the capital city of Western Australia. Gregory's political career began in earnest in 1870 when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia. He served in various roles in the government, including as Colonial Secretary and Chief Protector of Aborigines. In 1897, he was knighted for his services to the colony.
