1776 1852 Anne Clark Clarke Favours Frederick Mistress Obtaining Scandal Thompson Unlawful

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Ann Clarke, née Thompson (1776-1852), was a woman of intrigue and scandal who captured the attention of British society during the late 18th century. At the time of this portrait, Mary Ann was married to Joseph Clark but was also the mistress of Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. The Duke was the younger brother of King George III and the Commander-in-Chief of the British army. The scandal surrounding Mary Ann Clarke began in 1809 when she was accused of unlawfully obtaining favors from military officers in exchange for sexual favors. The allegations came to light during an investigation into military corruption, and Mary Ann was soon exposed as the ringleader of a widespread network of prostitution and bribery. Despite the damning evidence against her, Mary Ann continued to live a lavish lifestyle, entertaining high-ranking military officers and influential figures at her home in London. Her scandalous behavior was a source of great amusement for the public, and she became a popular subject of satirical cartoons and gossip. Despite the scandal, Mary Ann Clarke's relationship with the Duke of York continued, and they had several children together. The Duke eventually acknowledged his paternity and provided for their children in his will. This portrait of Mary Ann Clarke, taken around the time of the scandal, shows a confident and alluring woman, with a hint of mischief in her eyes. Her elaborate hairstyle and fashionable dress indicate her high social standing, despite the rumors that swirled around her. The portrait serves as a reminder of the complex and often scandalous lives that lay beneath the surface of Regency-era society.
