EDITORS COMMENTS
Bladder Wrack, Fucus vesiculosus, is a common brown seaweed found along the shores of the North Atlantic and North Sea. This handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, after a botanical illustration by David Blair, was published as part of Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" in London, 1880. The intricately detailed image showcases the unique features of Bladder Wrack, with its air-filled bladder-like sacs, or gas-filled vesicles, which give the seaweed its name. These sacs help the plant to float in the water and also provide buoyancy, allowing it to withstand the constant tug of the tides. Bladder Wrack has a long history of use in herbal medicine, particularly in Europe. It was traditionally used to treat a variety of conditions, including thyroid disorders, obesity, and arthritis. The seaweed is rich in iodine, which is essential for the production of thyroid hormones. It is also a good source of other minerals, including bromine, mannitol, and alginic acid. The process of creating this handcoloured lithograph involved creating a drawing on a limestone plate, which was then coated with a thin layer of wax. The areas to be printed were then exposed to a solution of gum arabic and water, which adhered to the drawn lines. The plate was then treated with a solution of iron chloride, which produced a blue line. The plate was then inked and wiped, and the paper was pressed against it to create the final image. The handcolouring was added later, using watercolour paints. The result is a stunningly detailed and vibrant image that captures the beauty and complexity of Bladder Wrack.
