EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Locomotive Steam Engine designed by Matthew Murray, as it appeared in the Newtons London Journal Volume XI, Plate VII, in 1826. The patent office library houses a copy of the original drawing from which this later print was redrawn, circa 1900. The steam engine, a groundbreaking invention of the Industrial Revolution, revolutionized transportation and marked the beginning of the railway era. Murray's design was a significant improvement from earlier models, featuring a more efficient boiler and a larger driving wheel. The intricate details of the engine's mechanism are beautifully captured in this print, with the steam pistons and connecting rods clearly visible. The firebox, chimney, and smoke stack are also depicted, showcasing the immense heat and power generated by the engine. The print serves as a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the past, and a reminder of the transformative impact of steam power on transportation and industry.
