EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the sleek and powerful form of a Royal Air Force (RAF) Hawker Hunter F.6, serial number XE610, as it gracefully taxis on the tarmac at RAF Horsham St. Faith, near Norwich, circa 1958. The Hawker Hunter, a British single-engine jet fighter and interceptor aircraft, was a key part of the RAF's fleet during the Cold War era. No. 74 Squadron, one of the RAF's oldest and most distinguished units, is proudly emblazoned on the fuselage of this particular Hunter. The squadron, which was formed in 1912, has a rich history in both World War I and II, and continues to serve the RAF with pride today. RAF Horsham St. Faith, now known as Norwich International Airport, was an important base for the RAF during the Cold War, housing various squadrons and their aircraft. The airfield's strategic location made it an essential defense asset, and the sound of roaring jet engines was a common occurrence. The Hawker Hunter F.6, with its distinctive delta wing design and powerful Rolls-Royce Avon jet engine, was a formidable aircraft in its time. Capable of reaching speeds over 700 miles per hour and armed with various air-to-air missiles and guns, it was a potent weapon in the RAF's arsenal. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era of aviation history, a time when the RAF's Hunter jets were a regular sight and sound in the skies above Norwich. The image serves as a reminder of the courage and dedication of the men and women who served in the RAF during the Cold War, and the crucial role that the Hunter played in defending the United Kingdom.
