EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, Princess Cecilie of Greece, née Princess Cecile of Hesse and by Rhine, is captured in a tender moment with her husband, Hereditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse and by Rhine, and their two eldest sons, Prince Ludwig and Prince Alexander. The image, taken in 1933, offers a glimpse into the personal lives of this European royal family. Princess Cecilie, born in 1911, was one of six children of Prince Philip of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. She was the eldest sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who would later marry Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Cecilie's marriage to Hereditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse and by Rhine, the heir to the Grand Duchy of Hesse, took place in Athens on February 9, 1931. The family is seen here in a warm and loving scene, with the Princess playfully holding her sons in her arms while her husband looks on with pride. The boys, Ludwig and Alexander, were born in 1931 and 1933, respectively. Tragically, both boys died young – Ludwig at the age of six in a hunting accident, and Alexander at the age of eight in a car crash. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the close-knit royal family and the short-lived happiness they experienced before the heartbreaking losses they would endure. The image also highlights the connections between the Greek and German royal families, as well as the broader European royal scene of the 1930s. The photograph is a historical treasure, offering a glimpse into the lives of the European royals during a time of change and upheaval. It is a poignant reminder of the personal connections and relationships that existed between the various European royal families, and the shared experiences and challenges they faced.
