Frederick Hugh Major Sykes Wing

EDITORS COMMENTS
Major Frederick Hugh Sykes, distinguished commander of the Military Wing of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), is seen here proudly standing next to one of the transport planes under his command. The RFC, the military aviation branch of the British Army during World War I, played a crucial role in providing air support for ground troops and transporting supplies and personnel to the front lines. Sykes, a highly decorated officer, is dressed in his full military uniform, complete with Sam Brown belt, peaked cap, and brass-buttoned tunic. His stern expression and confident posture convey a sense of determination and leadership. In his hand, he holds a pair of aviator's goggles, a necessary accessory for pilots and observers during flight. Behind Sykes, a RFC transport plane is parked on the tarmac, its engine idling and propellers spinning. The plane, a type that was commonly used for transporting troops and supplies, is adorned with the distinctive RFC roundel on the fuselage and wings. The plane's open cockpit and multiple seats suggest that it is ready for takeoff, with crew members and passengers aboard. The photo captures a moment of preparation and readiness, as Sykes and his team prepare to embark on another mission in support of the British war effort. The image is a testament to the vital role that military aviation played in the outcome of the war and the bravery and dedication of the men and women who served in the RFC.
