EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1936, when London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers to the picturesque town of Bridlington in Yorkshire. The poster, skillfully crafted by renowned artist Frank Mason, showcases a breathtaking view of the bay. As our eyes wander across the image, we are greeted by rowing boats gently gliding through calm waters and larger sailboats majestically soaring against the horizon. In this idyllic scene, Bridlington's charming town emerges from behind the shimmering waves. Its quaint architecture and inviting streets beckon visitors to explore its hidden treasures. Mason's mastery in capturing marine and coastal subjects is evident as he effortlessly brings this seaside haven to life. It is worth noting that Mason's talents extended beyond his artistic endeavors with LNER. Educated at HMS Conway and having spent time at sea himself, he possessed a deep understanding of maritime engineering and shipbuilding. This unique combination of skills allowed him to contribute not only as an exceptional designer for railway posters but also as an influential figure in Leeds and Hartlepool's engineering industries. As we gaze upon this remarkable print from National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we cannot help but be transported back in time; imagining ourselves strolling along Bridlington's shores or embarking on a memorable adventure aboard one of those elegant sailboats depicted so beautifully before us.
