Wall Art and Photo Gifts from Science Photo Library
Charles Darwin, British naturalist
Charles Darwin (1809-1882), British naturalist. Darwin had briefly studied medicine and then trained in the clergy, but his interest was in natural history. In 1831 he set sail as naturalist on HMS Beagle (left), which was to provide the fieldwork for his famous book. His theory of evolution was published as On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection (1859). It caused a storm of controversy with Christian orthodoxy, as it contradicted the widely accepted belief that different animal and plant species were created by a divine creator (God)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Charles Darwin, the renowned British naturalist whose groundbreaking work revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. Born in 1809, Darwin's insatiable curiosity led him to briefly study medicine and train as a clergyman before realizing his true passion lay in natural history. In 1831, he embarked on an extraordinary voyage aboard HMS Beagle as its resident naturalist. This expedition would become the foundation for his seminal book and theory of evolution, "On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection" published in 1859. Controversial at the time, Darwin's revolutionary ideas challenged Christian orthodoxy by contradicting widely held beliefs about divine creation. The image captures Darwin holding a globe, symbolizing his profound impact on our understanding of life on Earth. His keen observations during his travels through South America and encounters with diverse species like reptiles and birds from the Galapagos Islands shaped his evolutionary theories. As a scientist and botanist, Darwin dedicated himself to unraveling nature's mysteries while embracing evidence-based research. This artwork serves as a powerful reminder of his pivotal role in shaping modern biology and our perception of ourselves within the intricate web of life. With this print from Science Photo Library, we are transported back to the 19th century when one man's relentless pursuit of knowledge forever changed our understanding of existence itself.
