EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning vintage print captures the breathtaking beauty of The Trossachs, a picturesque region in Scotland. Produced by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) between 1923 and 1947, this poster was created to promote train services to this enchanting destination via the East Coast route. The artwork, skillfully crafted by Tom Purvis, showcases a mesmerizing view of Ellens Isle and Loch Katrine. Purvis was not only an accomplished artist but also a passionate advocate for elevating the status of commercial art as a profession. In fact, he played a pivotal role in founding the Society of Industrial Artists in 1930, which aimed to enhance training standards for commercial artists and expand their employment opportunities. In recognition of his contributions to design and industry, Purvis became one of the first Royal Designers for Industry in 1936. His talent is evident in this piece that transports viewers into the heart of Scotland's natural wonders. With its serene lakes, majestic mountains, and idyllic landscape, this LNER poster invites travelers to embark on an unforgettable journey through The Trossachs. Whether it be exploring hidden trails or cruising along Loch Katrine's tranquil waters, visitors are sure to be captivated by the region's timeless charm. This print from National Railway Museum serves as both a testament to Purvis' artistic prowess and a nostalgic glimpse into travel advertising during LNER's heyday – showcasing how art can inspire wanderlust even decades later.
