EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to Tintagel, North Cornwall, circa 1930. The image showcases the stunning beauty of this coastal region, with its rugged cliffs and picturesque beaches. Removed from LSWR Tri-Composite Carriage No 3598 during restoration at the National Railway Museum, this Southern Railways carriage print is a true treasure. The artwork was masterfully created by Donald Maxwell (1877-1936), an accomplished artist who studied at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art. Notably, Maxwell served as an official artist to the Admiralty during World War I and even accompanied the Prince of Wales on his tour of India. His talent extended beyond painting as he illustrated travel guides and books by renowned authors such as Kipling, Hardy, and Belloc. Maxwell's artistic prowess shines through in this print as he captures the essence of Tintagel's enchanting landscape. With its connection to Arthurian legend and King Arthur himself, Tintagel holds a special place in British folklore. This print not only serves as a visual delight but also reflects the rich history behind it. It is a testament to both Maxwell's skillful artistry and his contribution to promoting tourism through designing posters and carriage prints for SR (Southern Railways). Displayed proudly within the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this piece invites viewers to immerse themselves in the timeless charm of Tintagel while appreciating Maxwell's remarkable talent.
