EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a major fire at Butlers Wharf in Bermondsey, SE London, during a particularly cold March in the 1930s. The LCC-LFB (London County Council-London Fire Brigade) firefighters are seen valiantly attempting to extinguish the flames, their hoses stretching out like serpents across the icy landscape. The freezing weather had caused the water in the hoses to freeze, resulting in a surreal scene of icicles hanging from the hoses and the surrounding rubble. The fire, which engulfed a warehouse at the wharf, had reduced the metal and brass structures to a burnt and ruined state. The firemen, dressed in their iconic uniforms and helmets, are shown undeterred by the harsh conditions as they continue their firefighting efforts. The jet of water from one of the hoses creates a stark contrast against the wintry backdrop, adding to the dramatic scene. This photograph, taken in the 1930s, is a poignant reminder of the bravery and determination of the London Fire Brigade during a time when the elements themselves seemed to be working against them.
