Snow on the Highland Railway, 1895
Train travelling through thick snow at Altnabreac on the Highland Railway, 8 March 1895. The line is 300 metres above sea level and in places the snow drifts were 15 metres high. The locomotive has a snowplough attached to the front of it, clearing the snow as it travels along the track. Snowploughs were often used on the Highland Railway, because heavy show is common in Northern Scotland during the winter months
National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1895 showcases the awe-inspiring sight of a train battling its way through a snow-covered landscape on the Highland Railway. Taken at Altnabreac, Scotland, on 8 March 1895, this image transports us back to an era when railways conquered even the harshest winter conditions. The photograph highlights the formidable challenges faced by railway operators in Northern Scotland during winter months. The line's elevation of 300 meters above sea level meant that snowfall was frequent and intense. In some areas, colossal snow drifts reached heights of up to 15 meters, creating an arduous obstacle for trains to overcome. To combat these treacherous conditions, locomotives were equipped with specially designed snowploughs attached to their fronts. This ingenious addition allowed the train to plow through deep layers of snow as it made its way along the track. Such adaptations were common on the Highland Railway due to heavy and persistent snowfall in this region. This remarkable print not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It reminds us of our relentless pursuit for progress and our ability to adapt even in nature's most unforgiving circumstances.
