Kitson-Meyer 0-8-6-0T in Argentina

The private British locomotive industry produced thousands of steam locomotives for service overseas, 14, 000 for India alone. Another major market was South America, Argentina in particular. Recent histories of the city of Leeds scarcely acknowledge the extensive locomotive industry that once flourished there, five builders directly physical adjacent to each other in the Hunslet district with a grand tally of 11, 000 engines between them built over a period of more than 130 years. The largest of these was Kitson & Co. of whom a speciality was the exotic Kitson-Meyer articulated type. Here is a recently delivered Kitson-built 0-8-6-0T (1909) amid the snows of the high Andes on the Argentine Transandine Railway. The photographer was the late P C Dewhurst, who was both a professional locomotive engineer and a locomotive historian of note

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Kitson-Meyer 0-8-6-0T locomotive, a testament to the thriving British locomotive industry that catered to international markets. While India was a significant recipient of these steam engines, South America, particularly Argentina, also emerged as a major market. Surprisingly, Leeds' historical accounts often overlook the extensive locomotive industry that once thrived there. The Hunslet district housed five builders in close proximity to each other, collectively producing an impressive tally of 11,000 engines over more than 130 years. Amongst these manufacturers stood Kitson & Co. , renowned for their expertise in crafting exotic articulated types like the Kitson-Meyer. This particular image captures a recently delivered Kitson-built 0-8-6-0T from 1909 amidst the breathtaking snow-covered landscapes of the high Andes on Argentina's Transandine Railway. The late P C Dewhurst skillfully captured this momentous scene with his camera lens. Not only was he an accomplished professional locomotive engineer but also an esteemed historian specializing in trains and railways. His photograph immortalizes not just a magnificent piece of machinery but also pays homage to the rich history and craftsmanship behind it. This print serves as a reminder of Britain's influential role in shaping global transportation networks and highlights how these powerful machines conquered even the most challenging terrains worldwide.
