Scarborough Bridge, York, 1948

Class J72 0-6-0T locomotive number 68735 on Scarborough Bridge, York, by E R Wethersett, 15 August 1948. The locomotive is pulling freight to the freight terminal at Foss Islands, on the other side of York. Tank engines did not need a separate tender for water and coal. They could either push or pull trains, which meant that they did not have to be turned around on a turntable at the end of their journey. They were usually used on local lines

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the picturesque city of York, 1948. This print captures the iconic Scarborough Bridge, serving as a gateway for Class J72 0-6-0T locomotive number 68735. With its powerful presence and determination, this tank engine is seen effortlessly pulling freight across the bridge towards Foss Islands, destined for the bustling freight terminal on the other side of York. Tank engines like this one were a marvel of engineering ingenuity. Unlike their counterparts with separate tenders, these locomotives had an all-in-one design that eliminated the need for additional water and coal storage. This allowed them to navigate both forwards and backwards without requiring turning on a turntable at their destination. As we delve into railway history, it's fascinating to learn that tank engines such as this were predominantly used on local lines. Their versatility made them ideal for transporting goods efficiently within shorter distances. E R Wethersett's masterful composition perfectly encapsulates not only the architectural beauty of Scarborough Bridge but also pays homage to an era when steam power reigned supreme in transportation. Let your imagination wander as you envision yourself standing beside those tracks over seven decades ago – witnessing firsthand how these mighty machines shaped our nation's industrial landscape.
